My name is not Tina but Catherine. I am originally from France. The name Tinaliah comes a personal revelation relating to Christ, whose characteristic embodies the quality to overcome all situations and to persevere no matter what. About 25 years ago a government agent told me that I should turn my hobby into a business, I have not looked back since. I had to overcome and persevere through a lot, rape, an immigration then now disability status, a 5 years bout of homelessness, being a woman in a man’s world, but that did not stop me. I am now, with my husband John, helping other under-served Makers, Artists and Artisans to do the same. I am an aspiring milliner and creator of The New Havener hat. John and I dance on two legs! :) We sell products but our non profit side can also apply for grants and receive donations. In 2012 for profit,Tinaliah Designs and Its Caring Co-op or T1, was created after living and seeing the needs of other local Artisans. In 2016 Tinaliah “the One who perseveres” or T2, filed its 501(c)3 status in the state of CT.
I am deeply concerned with how over-consumerism and its ignorance contribute to poverty. Earnestly for the protection of the environment, I recycle, re-use or up-cycled textile, in all its forms. This unable T1 to design and manufacture high end and beautiful products at a relatively low cost. I aim to bring manufacturing back to Connecticut. T1 has been contracted by United Way, The Salvation Army, and local start ups in need of patterns and small runs. I love fabric and textile in all its forms but am more and more involved in the making of fabulous head-wear. Other T1, Co-op members sew as well, crochet, knit, even write poetry or take pictures of our colorful journey. Tinaliah T2, offers workshops on sewing, up-cycling, hat making, felting offering life skills to youth and adult while bridging some to economic development. Threads & Needles is our next coming workshop.
Tinaliah, T2 program Threads & Needles is the winner of the 2018 Yale/Dwight Hall Innovation Social Lab Award, as a non Yale participant. https://dwighthall.org/get-involved/programs/social-innovation-lab
